They say it started as just a couch. A ragged, sun-faded throne abandoned on the edge of West Texas. But in Marathon, nothing ordinary stays ordinary for long. Two trickster souls appeared one night — no one remembers their names, and maybe that’s the point. They saw the couch not as furniture, but as destiny.
Under starlit skies and the wide desert wind, they hoisted that outlaw seat onto their backs and began the wandering. Night after night, the couch appeared in strange places — crossroads, pastures, the steps of forgotten buildings. Folks would wake to find it like an omen, waiting for the brave to sit, pose, laugh, and be claimed by the spirit of the desert.
But not everyone understood. Whispers turned to grumbles, and grumbles turned to the heavy hand of the law. “Trespassing!” they cried. “Vandalism!” they charged. The couch-bearers stood before the judge, accused of crimes against property and propriety alike.
But just when all hope seemed to be lost, the judge threw down the gavel with a grin: “This is no crime. This is legend in the making.” The couch and the two fun-loving characters were freed. The charges vanished. And the story of La Causa del Couch was born.
From that day forward, the people declared that each year, under the fiery October sky, the couch would return — not hidden, not hushed, but carried like a banner through the desert. A festival of rebels, misfits, and storytellers. A gathering where laughter was law, the night was endless, and the couch — the sacred Couch throne — waited for all who dared to sit upon it.
And so, the First Annual Couchening was proclaimed. October 4th, in historic Marathon, Texas. Not just an event. Not just a party. A pilgrimage.
Because some furniture you sit on. But some furniture sits on history.
